How to calculate sales tax

Adding tax to a price: Tax = price × rate. Total = price + tax.

Removing tax from a total: Price = total ÷ (1 + rate). Tax = total − price.

Worked example: Ontario, 13% HST

A $150 purchase in Ontario: tax = $150 × 0.13 = $19.50. Total = $150 + $19.50 = $169.50. Working backwards from that same $169.50 total: price = $169.50 ÷ 1.13 = $150.00, tax = $169.50 − $150.00 = $19.50 — matching what we started with.
