What is PST?

Provincial Sales Tax (PST) is a separate tax that some provinces charge on top of the 5% federal GST, rather than blending the two into one HST rate. British Columbia charges 7% PST, Saskatchewan charges 6% PST, and Manitoba charges an equivalent 7% tax it calls the Retail Sales Tax (RST) rather than PST. Unlike HST, PST/RST is billed as its own line item, separate from GST, and is administered by the province rather than the CRA.

Quebec's QST is similar, but separate

Quebec's QST works the same way conceptually — a provincial tax on top of GST — but it has its own rate (9.975%) and its own dedicated page, since Revenu Québec (not the CRA) administers both GST and QST there. See the QST calculator for Quebec specifically.

How to calculate PST

Adding PST: Tax = price × combined rate (GST + PST). Total = price + tax.

Removing PST from a total: Price = total ÷ (1 + combined rate). Tax = total − price.

Worked example: British Columbia, 12% combined (5% GST + 7% PST)

A $180 purchase in BC: tax = $180 × 0.12 = $21.60 (that's $9.00 GST + $12.60 PST). Total = $180 + $21.60 = $201.60. Working backwards from that $201.60 total: price = $201.60 ÷ 1.12 = $180.00, tax = $201.60 − $180.00 = $21.60.

Frequently asked questions

Which provinces charge PST?
British Columbia (7%), Manitoba (7%, called RST) and Saskatchewan (6%) — each charged separately on top of the 5% GST.
Is PST the same everywhere?
No — the rate and what's taxable both vary by province. Check each province's page for specific exemptions.
What about Quebec?
Quebec has its own provincial sales tax, QST, at 9.975% — see the QST calculator.
Is PST charged on top of GST, or blended like HST?
On top — PST/RST is a separate line item from the 5% GST, unlike HST provinces where the two are billed as one combined rate.
Why is Manitoba's PST called RST?
It's a naming difference only — Manitoba's Retail Sales Tax (RST) works the same way as PST elsewhere, currently at 7%, cut down from 8% in 2019.
Does PST apply to services?
It depends on the province and the service — PST rules on services vary more than GST's, so check your province's specific list for anything beyond goods.
