How to back out GST and PST in BC

British Columbia charges 5% GST plus 7% PST on most goods, 12% combined, so the divisor is 1.12.

  1. Step 1: Pre-tax price = total ÷ 1.12. Example: $224 ÷ 1.12 = $200.00.
  2. Step 2: GST = $200 × 5% = $10.00.
  3. Step 3: PST = $200 × 7% = $14.00.
  4. Check: $200 × 1.12 = $224.00 ✓

Some items are taxed differently (for example, PST does not apply to many groceries and has other exemptions), so the 12% rate here assumes both taxes apply. More on BC sales tax and the PST calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the combined GST and PST rate in BC?
5% GST plus 7% PST equals 12% on most taxable goods and services.
How do I remove GST and PST from a total in BC?
Divide the total by 1.12 to get the price before tax, then GST is 5% and PST is 7% of that price.
Does this apply to every purchase?
No. Some goods and services are exempt or taxed at different rates, so use this when both GST and PST apply.
